This is a great recipe and looks like it came from a professional bakery. It isn’t hard–just a little time-consuming.
Holiday Bread
Ruby’s Special Cornbread
This cornbread is considered a favorite in our family. It was given to me by my mother-in-law. It is a very thick and hearty cornbread and goes well with most anything. You can also add tomatoes and ground beef.
Herman Applesauce Doughnuts
Chewy, tangy doughnuts made with Herman Sourdough Starter. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar while they’re hot.
Dad’s Breakfast Bread
This is my dad’s version of scones. It is a dough like cinnamon roll dough and it is fried in hot oil. Very good Sunday treat. Served with honey, jam or sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Vasilopita
The Vasilopita is a Greek New Year’s Bread. It is made in honor of a beautiful act of charity by St. Basil to the poor and needy of his flock. In order to insure that the needy would have money for life’s necessities, and knowing that the needy were also proud people, St. Basil had the ladies of his church bake sweet bread with coins baked into them. In this way he could give them money without demeaning them at all. It is therefore traditional to bake a coin into the Vasilopita (St. Basil’s Bread). The one who receives the coin is considered to be especially blessed for the year.
Rice Bread (Pirog)
This is one of our family’s traditional recipes, a regional Polish sweet bread with rice filling (From Breaking Bread: A Family History Preserved By Seven Sisters). It makes a wonderful tea bread!
Holiday Waffles
This is a recipe that I have used for years. If you are concerned about too much oil you might want to try cutting back a little on the oil. I don’t make waffles that much so I don’t worry about it! Add couple drops of food coloring to the batter. Red and green food colors for the holidays. Orange for Halloween, pink and red for Valentine’s Day, green for St. Patrick’s Day, red and blue for Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor day! Optional, dust with confectioners powdered sugar.
Bacon Sweet Potato Cornbread
A classic, old-fashioned, dense skillet corn bread gets jazzed up with bacon and sweet potato. I started with another recipe, added sweet potato and bacon, and substituted bacon grease for the shortening. Serve warm in wedges with butter.
Cranberry Corn Bread
A delicious holiday favorite! Sweet cranberries with a savory corn bread! What could be better?
Pecan Sweet Potato Bread
Moist delicious way to use up excess sweet potatoes or yams after the holidays. This is so delicious that it disappeared within minutes. Wrap in aluminum foil to keep the moisture in. Ideally, refrigerate the loaves for 2 hours or more before serving; or can be frozen and served later. Just remove from freezer and allow to thaw while still covered at room temperature for about 4 hours before serving.
Brown Soda Bread
This soda bread is healthy and tastes really good! The texture is moist and chewy, and it feels like an authentic Irish soda bread. Since buttermilk is not available in Japan, I used yogurt and mayonnaise instead.
Anise Seed Rolls
This is one of my favorite roll recipes. Everyone gets excited when I tell them I’m making these for Thanksgiving. They are sweet and have just the slightest hint of anise. They’re definitely worth the work, and I hope you love these as much as my family does!
Christmas in The Islands Bread
Satisfy your soul with pineapple, coconut, dried cherries, and a touch of rum, mon!
Beetroot Pancakes
This is a simple and tasty variation on a South African dessert favorite, pancakes with cinnamon sugar. The beet adds a delicious natural sweetness and flavor, and the resulting red color makes this a delight to present to the table.
LynzzPaige’s Kaiserschmarrn (Emperor’s Pancakes)
Kaiserschmarrn, also known as the Emperor’s Pancakes, is one of the most famous Austrian desserts. It is a lightly caramelized pancake with a sweet taste and fluffy texture. After living in Vienna, Austria, for almost two years, I’ve had my fair share of Kaiserschmarrn, and it is one of the best desserts that Austria has to offer.
Butternut Squash and Cranberry Muffins
I got some butternut squash and cranberries (both I am not fond of) in my ‘Bountiful Basket’ last week. Not having a clue what to do with them, I came up with this surprisingly yummy muffin. I made up this recipe with what I had on hand. It is really very light, tasty, and not too sweet. I serve mine with honey or sweetened cream cheese. If possible, always choose organic.
