This spiced applesauce is an amazing way to start the morning. I love it by itself or as a healthy topping for oatmeal, yogurt, or cottage cheese. I try to eat gluten- and sugar-free food as much as possible while keeping it delicious and full of flavor. This simple recipe is an easy choice! Agave nectar is a fantastic natural sweetener that is low carb and low glycemic index. It is about twice as sweet as sugar so use it in moderation. Use twice the amount of sugar if you are going to substitute. I like my apples tart, so feel free to sweeten to taste.
Healthy Side Dishes
Duck Fat-Roasted Brussels Sprouts
A few tablespoons of duck and a very hot oven is all you need to turn some sleepy Brussels sprouts into something much more special.
Sweet Potato Cranberry Bake
My father’s mother made this every year for our Thanksgiving dinner. It is not Thanksgiving to me without this dish. I do not like the tartness of most cranberry dishes, and sweet potatoes can be bland by themselves. This dish combines both to make a great all-in-one dish. When I take this dish to another person’s home, I bake the first time and add the yams, cover, and then wait to heat until I am at their house.
Potato and Broccoli Goodness
This is a good recipe for people who are trying to improve their diet! Delicious and super! I got this recipe from an empanada recipe. This was supposed to be a filling for the empanada, but when I was making it one day I messed up the dough and ended up not knowing what to do with the filling, so I just took a piece of bread and slapped some of the filling on bread; and I was like ‘This isn’t so bad.’ Ever since then, it’s one of my favorite recipes. Hope you guys like it! Garnish with kale leaves if desired.
Chunky Cinnamon-Orange Applesauce
A must-have recipe for the Jewish holidays or any time! Not to mention it’s the perfect counterpart to your favorite potato latke recipe! Serve warm or chilled.
Easy Sweet Potato Casserole
My husband begs me for this. I got the recipe from his mother. It’s simple and yummy.
Copycat Famous Dave’s® Drunken Rum Apples
My all-time favorite side dish! A very simple copy of Famous Dave’s® delicious Drunkin’ Apples!
Tomato Freekeh
Freekeh is fire-roasted baby wheat. It can be found in international or Middle Eastern stores. It can be used to replace rice. It has a very distinctive flavor. Any veggies or spices can be added to this recipe. This freekeh recipe will have a thick tomato saucy consistency. It has a slight kick, too.
Tuna with Rice Pilaf
A simply delicious meal! Sure to make your kitchen smell amazing! This recipe is very versatile, as well. For example, you may find it easier to use lima beans instead of edamame. Also you could use a different type of fish if you don’t like tuna. You could even use fresh herbs for a burst of flavor! Feel free to experiment. Enjoy!
Tutu (Dutch Antilles Bean Porridge)
This sweet and savory porridge made of black eyed peas is eaten for dinner.
Candied Baked Beans
For this baked bean dish, use your favorite style of beans, however I suggest using those with brown sugar and bacon.
Stewed Potatoes
Diced potatoes stewed with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and rutabaga in broth. Chicken, beef, or vegetable broth may be used.
Mandarin Orange Couscous
A quick and easy side dish that’s sure to impress, this is a refreshing change to plain couscous.
Carrots with Apricot Preserves
This tangy, fruity side dish looks beautiful served hot out of the oven. If you don’t want to heat up the oven, the carrots are pretty good simply simmered for 5 minutes in the sauce.
Mama Lola’s Estrellas
This is a great alternative to Spanish rice and accompanies any Mexican food dish wonderfully. This was one of my favorites growing up.
Cindy’s Southern Vegetable Delight
This is a great dish when you have all those extra summer vegetables on hand. Add some chicken if you like to make it a main dish, and serve over rice. The secret is to use all fresh vegetables.
Vegetable Curry Couscous
A variety of veggies make this interesting side dish versatile. I like to serve chicken in an apple, onion, and curry sauce over the top and sprinkle it with flaked coconut. Can also be made with quinoa, just adjust cooking time.
Squash and Green Bean Saute Side Dish
Simple, tasty side dish which is quick and easy to prepare.
